MRPL24

Description

The MRPL24 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L24) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The MRPL24 gene encodes a protein called 39S ribosomal protein L24, mitochondrial. This protein is part of the ribosomes found in mitochondria, which are responsible for protein synthesis within these cellular organelles. Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes have two subunits: a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They differ from ribosomes in bacteria in their protein-to-rRNA ratio and the absence of a 5S rRNA. The MRPL24 protein is part of the 39S large subunit and is larger than its counterpart in bacteria. Two different forms of the MRPL24 gene have been identified, but both produce the same protein.

MRPL24 is also known as L24mt, MRP-L18, MRP-L24, uL24m.
