MRPL23

Description

The MRPL23 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L23) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The MRPL23 gene codes for a protein known as 39S ribosomal protein L23, mitochondrial. This protein plays a crucial role in protein synthesis within the mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of cells. Mitochondria have their own ribosomes, called mitoribosomes, which are made up of a small (28S) and a large (39S) subunit. MRPL23 is part of the large subunit. Unlike bacterial ribosomes, mitoribosomes are more complex and have a different protein-to-RNA ratio. Interestingly, while MRPL23 is located in a region of chromosome 11 known for imprinted genes, it is expressed from both copies of the chromosome.

The MRPL23 gene, located on chromosome 11, encodes a protein essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondria. It's a component of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (mt-LSU), a crucial part of the 39S subunit, which, along with the 28S subunit, constitutes the complete mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome). MRPL23 contributes to the formation of the mitoribosome's structure and facilitates protein synthesis by enabling the translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) into proteins within the mitochondria. The gene is expressed from both copies of the chromosome (biallelically) despite being located in a region containing imprinted genes.

MRPL23 is also known as L23MRP, RPL23, RPL23L, uL23m.
