MMP25

Description

The MMP25 (matrix metallopeptidase 25) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

MMP25 is an enzyme involved in breaking down the extracellular matrix. It's part of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, which plays a role in various biological processes, including embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling. Unlike most MMPs that are secreted as inactive proteins, MMP25 is attached to the cell membrane. Its role in inflammatory responses and cancer is thought to be related to its ability to inactivate alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor, a crucial protector against proteolytic enzymes, and its potential to activate MMP2, which is linked to tumor invasion and metastasis.

MMP25 can activate progelatinase A.

MMP25 is also known as MMP-25, MMP20, MMP20A, MMPL1, MT-MMP 6, MT-MMP6, MT6-MMP, MT6MMP, MTMMP6.
