MMP24

Description

The MMP24 (matrix metallopeptidase 24) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

MMP24 (Matrix metalloproteinase-24) is an enzyme encoded by the MMP24 gene in humans. MMPs are involved in breaking down extracellular matrix during normal processes like embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in diseases like arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that are activated by extracellular proteinases. However, MMP24 belongs to the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) subfamily, which have potential transmembrane domains suggesting their expression at the cell surface rather than secretion. MMP24 activates MMP2 by cleavage. The gene was previously called MMP25 but has been renamed MMP24.

MMP24 is also known as MMP-24, MMP25, MT-MMP 5, MT-MMP5, MT5-MMP, MT5MMP, MTMMP5.
