Description

The MKRN3 (makorin ring finger protein 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

The MKRN3 gene provides instructions for making the MKRN3 protein, which plays a crucial role in regulating the onset of puberty. This protein inhibits the release of GnRH, a hormone that triggers puberty, from the hypothalamus. MKRN3 likely functions within the ubiquitin-proteasome system, attaching ubiquitin to proteins that would otherwise stimulate GnRH release. This degradation prevents premature puberty. Interestingly, only the copy of MKRN3 inherited from the father is active, showcasing a phenomenon called genomic imprinting.
