Description

Prevotella buccalis is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the oral microbiome, residing on the surfaces of teeth, tongue, and other oral tissues. It is a pleomorphic, non-motile, anaerobic or facultatively anaerobic bacterium.

Associated Diseases

  • Dental caries (cavities): Prevotella buccalis is often associated with the development of dental caries due to its ability to ferment various carbohydrates present in the oral cavity.

  • Periodontal disease (gum disease): It is implicated in the progression of periodontal disease, particularly in cases of aggressive periodontitis.

  • Endocarditis: Prevotella buccalis can translocate from the oral cavity to the blood circulation and cause endocarditis, an inflammation of the heart‘s inner lining.
