Bacillus cytotoxicus

Bacillus Cytotoxicus: A Stealthy Pathogen

Description:

Bacillus cytotoxicus is a Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium that belongs to the Bacillus cereus group. It is widely distributed in the environment, including soil, water, and food. Bacillus cytotoxicus produces a potent toxin called cytotoxin K (CytK), which is responsible for its harmful effects on human health.

Associated Diseases:

Bacillus cytotoxicus is primarily associated with two main types of infections:

  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC): A severe intestinal infection that can lead to tissue death in newborn babies, especially premature infants.
  • Food poisoning: Bacillus cytotoxicus can contaminate food, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms typically occur within 1-6 hours of consuming contaminated food.

Did you Know ?

  • In the United States, Bacillus cytotoxicus is the second most common cause of community-acquired NEC in preterm infants, after Staphylococcus aureus.
