Blautia hydrogenotrophica

Blautia hydrogenotrophica: The Gut Microbe with a Unique Metabolic Pathway

Description

Blautia hydrogenotrophica is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Lachnospiraceae family. It is a prominent member of the human gut microbiome, accounting for up to 3% of its composition.

Unlike most gut bacteria that ferment carbohydrates, Blautia hydrogenotrophica specializes in consuming hydrogen gas (H2). This unique metabolic pathway, known as hydrogenotrophy, allows it to thrive in the oxygen-depleted environment of the colon.

Associated Diseases

While research on Blautia hydrogenotrophica is still in its early stages, some studies have linked its presence or absence to various health conditions:

  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome: Low levels of Blautia hydrogenotrophica have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Alterations in Blautia hydrogenotrophica abundance have been observed in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn‘s disease.
  • Colon cancer: Reduced levels of Blautia hydrogenotrophica may increase the risk of colon cancer.

Did you Know ?

A 2016 study published in Nature Medicine found that individuals with high levels of Blautia hydrogenotrophica had a 20% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, highlighting the potential role of this gut microbe in maintaining metabolic health.
