Bifidobacterium

Bifidobacterium is a genus of beneficial bacteria that reside in the human gut. These microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy digestive system and overall well-being.

Bifidobacterium are gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria characterized by their characteristic "Y" or "V" shape. They are non-motile and do not form spores. Bifidobacterium species are found primarily in the small intestine and colon, where they ferment carbohydrates to produce lactic acid and other beneficial compounds.

Imbalances in Bifidobacterium levels have been linked to various health conditions, including:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Low levels of Bifidobacterium are associated with an increased risk of IBD, including Crohn‘s disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Studies suggest that Bifidobacterium supplementation can improve IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea.
  • Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC): Premature infants with low levels of Bifidobacterium are at a higher risk of developing NEC, a severe intestinal infection.

Approximately 80% of the Bifidobacterium population is found in breast-fed infants, highlighting the importance of breast milk in establishing a healthy gut microbiome.
