Eggerthella

Eggerthella: The Beneficial Bacteria and Its Role in Gut Health

Description:

Eggerthella is a genus of Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes. These bacteria are commonly found in the human gut microbiome and play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Eggerthella species are typically non-pathogenic and have been associated with various health benefits.

Associated Diseases:

Although Eggerthella bacteria are generally considered harmless, their presence or absence has been linked to certain diseases and conditions. Studies have suggested an inverse relationship between Eggerthella abundance and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn‘s disease and ulcerative colitis. Higher levels of Eggerthella have been associated with reduced inflammation and improved disease activity in IBD patients.

In addition, Eggerthella species have been implicated in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. While the exact mechanisms are still being investigated, these bacteria may contribute to metabolic regulation and immune function, influencing the development and progression of these chronic conditions.

Did you Know ?

A study published in the journal "Nature Medicine" found that individuals with low levels of Eggerthella lenta bacteria in their gut microbiomes had a 3-fold increased risk of developing Crohn‘s disease.
