Bacillus cereus
Bacillus cereus: A Ubiquitous and Potentially Dangerous Bacteria
Description
Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that is widely distributed in the environment. It can be found in soil, dust, water, and food, especially those containing starch or protein. B. cereus produces heat-resistant spores that enable it to survive harsh conditions such as heat and desiccation.
Associated Diseases
B. cereus is responsible for a range of human illnesses, including:
- Diarrheal disease: The most common form of B. cereus illness, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
- Emetic disease: A less common form caused by a different strain of B. cereus, characterized by intense vomiting.
- Ocular infections: B. cereus can cause conjunctivitis and other eye infections.
- Wound infections: B. cereus can infect wounds, leading to skin abscesses or cellulitis.
- Bacteremia: In rare cases, B. cereus can enter the bloodstream and cause a life-threatening infection.

Every year, approximately 2-3 million cases of B. cereus food poisoning are reported worldwide.
