MGST3

Description

The MGST3 (microsomal glutathione S-transferase 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

Microsomal glutathione S-transferase 3 (MGST3) is an enzyme encoded by the MGST3 gene in humans. It belongs to the MAPEG (Membrane-Associated Proteins in Eicosanoid and Glutathione metabolism) family, which includes several proteins involved in the production of leukotrienes and prostaglandin E, important mediators of inflammation. MGST3 catalyzes the conjugation of leukotriene A4 and reduced glutathione to produce leukotriene C4. It also exhibits glutathione-dependent peroxidase activity towards lipid hydroperoxides.

MGST3 exhibits both glutathione S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase activities towards oxyeicosanoids, contributing to cellular detoxification and the synthesis of bioactive metabolites. It catalyzes the conjugate addition of reduced glutathione to the alpha, beta-unsaturated C=C carbonyl group of eicosanoids like leukotriene A4 and 15-deoxy-Delta12,14-prostaglandin J2, forming GSH adducts that play a role in the inflammatory response. Additionally, MGST3 catalyzes the glutathione-dependent reduction of eicosanoid peroxides to generate corresponding eicosanoid hydroxides.

MGST3 is also known as GST-3, GST-III.
