MGST1

Description

The MGST1 (microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

Microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1 (MGST1) is an enzyme encoded by the MGST1 gene in humans. It belongs to the MAPEG (Membrane-Associated Proteins in Eicosanoid and Glutathione metabolism) family, which includes six human proteins involved in various cellular functions. MGST1, along with other family members, plays a crucial role in protecting cells from harmful compounds. It catalyzes the conjugation of glutathione to electrophiles, detoxifying them. MGST1 also reduces lipid hydroperoxides, mitigating oxidative stress. This enzyme is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and the outer mitochondrial membrane, where it safeguards these membranes from damage. Four transcript variants of the MGST1 gene encode one protein isoform.

MGST1 is also known as GST12, MGST, MGST-I, PMAN.
