MGARP

Description

The MGARP (mitochondria localized glutamic acid rich protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

MGARP influences the movement of mitochondria within cells, particularly along microtubule tracks. It helps direct mitochondria towards nerve endings during oxygen deprivation, facilitating energy supply. MGARP also assists in the relocation of a protein called TRAK2/GRIF1 from the cell's main fluid (cytoplasm) to the mitochondria. Furthermore, it contributes to the production of steroid hormones by maintaining the number and shape of mitochondria. In developing brain regions, MGARP acts as a brake, controlling the organization and movement of mitochondria in nerve cells.

MGARP is also known as C4orf49, CESP-1, HUMMR, OSAP.
