MFN1
Description
The MFN1 (mitofusin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.
Mitofusin-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MFN1 gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a mediator of mitochondrial fusion. This protein and mitofusin 2 are homologs of the Drosophila protein fuzzy onion (Fzo). They are mitochondrial membrane proteins that interact with each other to facilitate mitochondrial targeting.
Mitochondrial outer membrane GTPase that mediates mitochondrial clustering and fusion. Membrane clustering requires GTPase activity, which may involve a major rearrangement of the coiled coil domains. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles, and their morphology is determined by the equilibrium between mitochondrial fusion and fission events. Overexpression induces the formation of mitochondrial networks (in vitro). Has low GTPase activity.
MFN1 is also known as hfzo1, hfzo2.
