Description
The MED4 (mediator complex subunit 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.
MED4, also known as Mediator complex subunit 4 (MED4), is a protein encoded by the MED4 gene in humans. It is a component of the vitamin D receptor-interacting protein (DRIP) complex, which acts as a nuclear receptor coactivator. The DRIP complex has the ability to activate nuclear receptors in a ligand-dependent manner. MED4 has been shown to interact with MED25.
MED4 is a component of the Mediator complex, a key regulator of transcription for nearly all genes that rely on RNA polymerase II. The Mediator acts as a bridge, transmitting information from specific regulatory proteins to the core RNA polymerase II machinery, which is responsible for building RNA molecules. Mediator is drawn to promoter regions on DNA through interactions with regulatory proteins. It then acts as a platform, bringing together RNA polymerase II and the general transcription factors to form a functional complex that can initiate the transcription process.
