Description

The MCOLN2 (mucolipin TRP cation channel 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

MCOLN2, also known as TRPML2 (transient receptor potential cation channel, mucolipin subfamily, member 2), is a protein encoded by the MCOLN2 gene in humans. It belongs to the TRPML channel family, a subgroup of the TRP ion channel family. TRPML2 is linked to the Arf6-regulated trafficking pathway and is involved in the intracellular transport of membranes and membrane proteins.

MCOLN2 acts as a nonselective cation channel, likely playing a role in regulating membrane trafficking events. It functions as a calcium-permeable cation channel with inwardly rectifying activity. MCOLN2 may activate ARF6 and participate in the trafficking of GPI-anchored cargo proteins to the cell surface through the ARF6-regulated recycling pathway. It may also contribute to immune processes, potentially having redundant roles with TRPML1 in B cell lysosomes for adaptive immunity, and influencing chemokine secretion and macrophage migration in innate immunity. MCOLN2 may be involved in lysosome-dependent cellular events, possibly through tissue-specific heteromerization with MCOLN1.
