MC5R

Description

The MC5R (melanocortin 5 receptor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

The MC5R gene, located on chromosome 18, encodes a protein called Melanocortin 5 receptor (MC5R). This receptor plays a crucial role in regulating sebum production. Disruption of MC5R in mice leads to reduced sebum production and disrupted exocrine glands. Beyond its role in sebum production, MC5R is involved in various functions, including:

  • Promoting fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle and lipolysis in adipocytes.
  • Essential for erythrocyte differentiation.
  • Participation in inflammatory processes.
  • Maintaining thermal homeostasis.
  • Expression in the brain at levels influenced by physical activity.

MC5R is heavily expressed in the preputial gland of mice, a modified sebaceous gland involved in pheromone production.

MC5R is also known as MC2.
