MBLAC1

Description

The MBLAC1 (metallo-beta-lactamase domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

MBLAC1 is an endoribonuclease that specifically cleaves histone pre-mRNA at its 3' end, playing a crucial role in histone pre-mRNA processing during the S-phase of the cell cycle. This processing is essential for the cell to enter and progress through the S-phase. MBLAC1 recognizes specific sequences downstream of a stem-loop structure in the pre-mRNA, cleaving at two distinct sites: a major site after the 5'-ACCCA-3' sequence and a minor site after the 5'-ACCCACA-3' sequence. The presence of an HDE element at the 3' end of the histone pre-RNA may be required to prevent non-specific cleavage by MBLAC1.
