LGALS4

Description

The LGALS4 (galectin 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Galectin-4 is a protein encoded by the LGALS4 gene in humans. It belongs to the galectin family, which are beta-galactoside-binding proteins involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. LGALS4 is an S-type lectin that is underexpressed in colorectal cancer. It contains two carbohydrate recognition domains and is typically found in the stomach and intestine. Galectin-4 binds with high affinity to lipid rafts and may play a role in protein delivery to cells. It is involved in several physiological functions, including lipid raft stabilization, apical trafficking, bactericidal activity against bacteria expressing blood group antigen, intestinal wound healing, and axonal growth and myelination in neurons. It has been implicated in various cancers, including pancreatic carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, breast carcinoma, gastric cancer, and lung cancer, but its role in these cancers is complex and contradictory.

LGALS4 is also known as GAL4, L36LBP.
