LGALS13
Description
The LGALS13 (galectin 13) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
LGALS13 encodes Placental protein 13 (PP13), a protein composed of two identical subunits linked by disulfide bonds. PP13 shares structural similarities with members of the beta-galactoside-binding S-type lectin family but lacks the key residue for binding beta-galactoside. Its ligand remains unidentified. Low PP13 levels in the first trimester of pregnancy are associated with a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia later in pregnancy.
LGALS13 binds beta-galactoside and lactose. It is a strong inducer of T-cell apoptosis (PubMed:10527825, PubMed:19497882). It also exhibits hemagglutinating activity towards chicken erythrocytes (PubMed:29343868). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10527825, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19497882, ECO:0000269|PubMed:29343868}
LGALS13 is also known as GAL13, PLAC8, PP13.
