Before you even open your kit, timing is everything.

• What to do: Do not eat, drink (including water), smoke, chew paan or gum, or brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes before collecting your sample.

• Why it matters: Consuming food or beverages right before the test leaves foreign particles or chemicals in your mouth. This can contaminate the sample, degrade your DNA, or cause the laboratory analysis to fail—meaning you would have to undergo the hassle of recollecting your sample.

Step 2: Ensure Your Mouth is Clean

While you shouldn‘t brush your teeth immediately before the test, you do want to ensure your mouth is free of debris.

• What to do: Gently rinse your mouth with plain water before your 30-minute fasting window starts. Additionally, make sure your lips are free of any lip balm, gloss, or lipstick.

Step 4: Collect Your Swab Sample

Now, you’re ready to collect your genetic material.

• Open with care: Carefully peel open the swab package. Be very careful not to touch the cotton tip of the swab with your fingers, and do not rest it on any surface.

• Swab thoroughly: Insert the swab into your mouth and rub it firmly against the inside of your cheeks, gums, and underneath your tongue for about 30 to 60 seconds. You are trying to gather cells, so don‘t just wet it with saliva—give it a good, firm rub!

• Secure the sample: Place the swab tip into the collection tube provided. Depending on your specific kit design, you will either snap off the swab stick at the designated breaking point or secure it directly into the liquid stabilizing preservative.
