Description

The KTN1 (kinectin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

Kinectin is a protein encoded by the KTN1 gene in humans. It plays a crucial role in the transport of cellular organelles and vesicles along microtubules within the cytoplasm. This transport is essential for processes such as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane recycling, Golgi assembly at the microtubule organizing center, and the alignment of lysosomes along microtubules. Kinectin acts as a microtubule-associated protein (MAP), facilitating the movement of organelles. One such MAP is the molecular motor kinesin, an ATPase that propels vesicles unidirectionally towards the plus end of the microtubule. Kinectin is a large integral ER membrane protein.

Kinectin acts as a receptor for kinesin, playing a crucial role in kinesin-driven vesicle movement within the cell. It also accumulates in integrin-based adhesion complexes (IAC) when integrins are clustered by fibronectin.

KTN1 is also known as CG1, KNT, MU-RMS-40.19.
