KRTAP5-5

Description

The KRTAP5-5 (keratin associated protein 5-5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

KRTAP5-5, along with other hair keratin-associated proteins (KRTAPs), forms an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix embeds hair keratin intermediate filaments, providing structural support and contributing to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. The extensive disulfide bond cross-linking between KRTAP5-5 and hair keratins, facilitated by the high cysteine content of KRTAP5-5, is crucial for this structural integrity.

KRTAP5-5 is also known as KRTAP5-11, KRTAP5.5.
