KRTAP25-1

Description

The KRTAP25-1 (keratin associated protein 25-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP25-1 is a hair keratin-associated protein that contributes to the structural integrity of the hair shaft. It is located in the hair cortex, where it forms part of the interfilamentous matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments. KRTAP25-1 plays a crucial role in the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft by cross-linking with hair keratins through disulfide bonds. This cross-linking is facilitated by the protein's abundant cysteine residues. The interfilamentous matrix also includes high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins.

KRTAP25-1 is also known as KAP25.1.
