KRTAP24-1

Description

The KRTAP24-1 (keratin associated protein 24-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP24-1 is a keratin-associated protein found in the hair cortex, where it contributes to the formation of a strong and resilient hair shaft. It interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments, forming an interfilamentous matrix that is essential for hair structure. KRTAP24-1 is rich in cysteine residues, which enable extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with hair keratins. These disulfide bonds help create a rigid and durable structure for the hair shaft.

KRTAP24-1 is also known as KAP24.1.
