KRTAP19-4

Description

The KRTAP19-4 (keratin associated protein 19-4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP19-4 is a hair keratin-associated protein that contributes to the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. It forms part of the interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex, where it interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments. KRTAP19-4 plays a crucial role in this matrix by cross-linking with hair keratins through extensive disulfide bonds. This cross-linking is facilitated by the abundance of cysteine residues within KRTAP19-4. The interfilamentous matrix also includes high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, which contribute to the overall structure and strength of the hair shaft.

KRTAP19-4 is also known as KAP19.4.
