KRTAP19-3

Description

The KRTAP19-3 (keratin associated protein 19-3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP19-3 is a hair keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) that contributes to the structure and strength of hair. It forms part of the interfilamentous matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments within the hair cortex. This matrix plays a crucial role in creating a rigid and resistant hair shaft. KRTAP19-3 achieves this by extensively cross-linking with hair keratin molecules through disulfide bonds, facilitated by its high content of cysteine residues. KRTAP19-3 also belongs to the category of high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, further contributing to the matrix's composition.

KRTAP19-3 is also known as GTRHP, KAP19.3.
