KRTAP15-1

Description

The KRTAP15-1 (keratin associated protein 15-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP15-1, a hair keratin-associated protein, contributes to the structural integrity of the hair shaft by forming an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix is composed of various keratin-associated proteins, including KRTAP15-1, which interact with hair keratin intermediate filaments. The strong, rigid structure of the hair shaft is achieved through extensive disulfide bond formation between KRTAP15-1 and hair keratins, facilitated by the abundant cysteine residues present in KRTAP15-1. KRTAP15-1, alongside other matrix proteins, including high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, plays a crucial role in establishing the characteristic strength and resilience of hair.

KRTAP15-1 is also known as KAP15.1.
