KRTAP12-1

Description

The KRTAP12-1 (keratin associated protein 12-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

KRTAP12-1 is crucial for the structural integrity of hair. It forms part of the interfilamentous matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments in the hair cortex. This matrix, composed of various KRTAPs, including high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, is essential for building a strong, resilient hair shaft. KRTAP12-1, rich in cysteine residues, contributes to this strength through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with hair keratins.

KRTAP12-1 is also known as KAP12.1, KRTAP12.1.
