KRTAP1-4

Description

The KRTAP1-4 (keratin associated protein 1-4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP1-4, a hair keratin-associated protein, plays a crucial role in the hair cortex by forming an interfilamentous matrix that surrounds keratin intermediate filaments. This matrix provides structural integrity and strength to the hair shaft. KRTAP1-4 achieves this through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine residues present in hair keratins. This cross-linking process, facilitated by the high sulfur content of KRTAP1-4, contributes to the rigidity and resistance of the hair shaft.

KRTAP1-4 is also known as KAP1.4, KRTAP1.4.
