KDM4B

Description

The KDM4B (lysine demethylase 4B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Lysine-specific demethylase 4B is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the KDM4B gene. KDM4B belongs to the alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent hydroxylase superfamily.

KDM4B specifically removes methyl groups from lysine 9 of histone H3 (H3K9me3), contributing to the epigenetic regulation of gene expression. This enzyme is unable to demethylate other lysine residues on histone H3 (H3K4, H3K27, H3K36) or histone H4 (H4K20). KDM4B exhibits a weaker demethylating activity compared to its related enzymes KDM4A, KDM4C, and KDM4D. The demethylation process produces formaldehyde and succinate. KDM4B plays a crucial role in the development of the central nervous system.

KDM4B is also known as JMJD2B, MRD65, TDRD14B.
