KCNK5

Description

The KCNK5 (potassium two pore domain channel subfamily K member 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

The KCNK5 gene in humans encodes the K2P5.1 protein, a member of the potassium channel superfamily with two pore-forming P domains. This gene is primarily expressed in the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney. The protein's high sensitivity to external pH, combined with its expression pattern, suggests a significant role in renal potassium transport.

This potassium channel is sensitive to changes in pH and allows potassium ions to flow out of the cell more easily than into the cell (outward rectification). However, this outward rectification is lost when the concentration of potassium ions outside the cell is very high.

KCNK5 is also known as K2p5.1, KCNK5b, TASK-2, TASK2.
