KCNA6

Description

The KCNA6 (potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily A member 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

KCNA6, also known as Kv1.6, is a protein encoded by the KCNA6 gene in humans. It is a subunit of a voltage-gated potassium channel.

KCNA6 encodes a voltage-gated potassium channel that facilitates potassium transport across excitable membranes. It forms tetrameric channels, selectively allowing potassium ions to pass based on their electrochemical gradient. The channel transitions between open and closed states in response to membrane voltage changes. It can form homotetrameric channels composed solely of KCNA6 subunits, or heterotetrameric channels incorporating various combinations of KCNA1, KCNA2, KCNA4, and other related subunits. The composition of the channel influences its properties. Cytoplasmic beta subunits modulate channel activity by regulating the location of alpha subunits and promoting rapid inactivation. Homotetrameric KCNA6 channels exhibit rapid activation and slow inactivation.

KCNA6 is also known as HBK2, KV1.6, PPP1R96.
