ITGB8

Description

The ITGB8 (integrin subunit beta 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The ITGB8 gene encodes Integrin beta-8, a protein that plays a crucial role in cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. It forms a heterodimer with an alpha subunit, creating an integrin complex. This complex is particularly important in airway epithelial proliferation. ITGB8 interacts with RhoGDI1, influencing the activation of Rho GTPases and promoting Glioblastoma cell invasiveness. The expression levels of ITGB8 are associated with tumor characteristics: high levels correlate with high angiogenesis and poorly invasive glioblastoma tumors, while low levels are linked to highly invasive but low angiogenic tumors.

Integrin alpha-V:beta-8 (ITGAV:ITGB8) acts as a receptor for fibronectin, recognizing the R-G-D sequence within its ligands. It is involved in the release of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta-1) from the Latency-associated peptide (LAP) through its interaction with integrin alpha-V:beta-6 (ITGAV:ITGB6), contributing to TGF-beta-1 activation on the surface of activated regulatory T-cells (Tregs). Additionally, ITGAV:ITGB8 plays a crucial role in vasculogenesis.
