IRS2
Description
The IRS2 (insulin receptor substrate 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.
The IRS2 gene produces insulin receptor substrate 2, a protein that acts as a signaling molecule in the cell. It helps relay signals from insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1, and other signaling molecules. This protein connects various receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) to other proteins inside the cell, controlling their activity. IRS2 is activated by phosphorylation (adding a phosphate group) by the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase when insulin binds to its receptor. It can also be activated by interleukin 4 receptor-associated kinase in response to IL4. Mice without IRS2 develop diabetes and have significantly smaller brains (around 40% reduction).
