Description

The IPO11 (importin 11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

Importin-11 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IPO11 gene.

Importin-11 functions as a nuclear transport receptor, mediating the import of proteins into the nucleus. It recognizes and binds to nuclear localization signals (NLS) on cargo proteins, forming an importin/substrate complex. This complex is then transported to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through interactions with nucleoporins. The transport process is energy-dependent, relying on the GTP-bound form of Ran. Upon reaching the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to importin, leading to the dissociation of the importin/substrate complex. Importin is then re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The directionality of nuclear import is maintained by the asymmetric distribution of Ran's GTP- and GDP-bound forms between the cytoplasm and nucleus. Importin-11 is known to facilitate the nuclear import of proteins like UBE2E3 and RPL12.

IPO11 is also known as RanBP11.
