INPP5A

Description

The INPP5A (inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

Type I inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate 5-phosphatase is an enzyme produced by the INPP5A gene in humans. This protein is attached to cell membranes and its role is to break down inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3), a molecule involved in increasing calcium levels within cells. InsP3 acts as a messenger, triggering cellular responses to various signals.

This phosphatase specifically breaks down the 5-phosphate group from inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, converting it into inositol 1,4-bisphosphate, and it also breaks down inositol 1,3,4,5-tetrasphosphate into inositol 1,3,4-trisphosphate (PMID: 8013665, PMID: 8769125, PMID: 8626616). It's essential for the survival of cerebellar Purkinje cells (Based on similar evidence).

INPP5A is also known as 5PTASE.
