Description
The IL9 (interleukin 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
IL-9 can refer to: Interleukin-9, a cytokine involved in immune responses.
IL-9 is a multifunctional cytokine primarily produced by T helper 2 lymphocytes, as well as mast cells and NKT cells. It plays a crucial role in the immune response to parasites, influencing intestinal epithelial permeability and adaptive immunity. IL-9 also drives the differentiation of specific T-cell subsets, including IL-17 producing helper T-cells (TH17), and promotes mast cell proliferation and differentiation. Its signaling pathway involves a receptor composed of IL9R and IL2RG subunits. Upon receptor activation, JAK1 and JAK3 kinases are rapidly activated, leading to STAT1, STAT3, and STAT5-mediated transcriptional programs. STAT1 appears to solely mediate the induction of differentiation genes, while STAT3 and STAT5 are responsible for protecting cells from apoptosis.
