IL13
Description
The IL-13 gene encodes a cytokine, interleukin-13 (IL-13), a crucial player in the immune system‘s response to allergens and parasites. It is primarily produced by T helper 2 (Th2) cells, although other immune cells like mast cells and eosinophils also secrete it. IL-13 acts through its receptor, IL-13Rα1, to exert a variety of effects, including promoting mucus production, inhibiting inflammation, and influencing the development of allergic responses. Its role is complex and often intertwined with other cytokines, contributing to both beneficial and detrimental outcomes in different contexts.
