HS3ST6

Description

The HS3ST6 (heparan sulfate-glucosamine 3-sulfotransferase 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

HS3ST6 is a sulfotransferase enzyme that uses PAPS (3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate) to attach a sulfate group to heparan sulfate. This specific modification of heparan sulfate creates a binding site for Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1), allowing the virus to enter cells. Notably, HS3ST6 does not transform non-anticoagulant heparan sulfate into anticoagulant heparan sulfate, unlike another related enzyme, 3-OST-1.

HS3ST6 is also known as 3-OST-6, 3OST6, HAE8, HS3ST5.
