HOXC11

Description

The HOXC11 (homeobox C11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

The HOXC11 gene encodes a protein called Homeobox protein Hox-C11. This protein is a transcription factor, meaning it controls the activity of other genes. It belongs to the homeobox family of genes, which are involved in the development of body structure in all multicellular organisms. Humans have four sets of homeobox genes (HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, and HOXD), each located on a different chromosome. The HOXC11 gene is found on chromosome 12 and is one of several HOXC genes clustered together. Hox-C11 binds to a specific DNA sequence in the promoter of the lactase-phlorizin hydrolase gene, which helps regulate the production of lactase, the enzyme responsible for digesting lactose. Hox-C11 may also play a role in early intestinal development. An alternative version of the HOXC11 gene produces a shorter protein, but its function is not fully understood.

HOXC11 is also known as HOX3H.
