HORMAD2

Description

The HORMAD2 (HORMA domain containing 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

HORMA domain containing 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HORMAD2 gene.

HORMAD2 is crucial for monitoring proper chromosome pairing (synapsis) during early stages of meiosis (meiotic prophase). It does this by attracting ATR, a key protein involved in DNA damage response. HORMAD2 plays a central role in checkpoints that ensure proper chromosome pairing in both male and female meiosis. It's essential for activating ATR on unpaired chromosome regions, leading to a process called meiotic silencing of unsynapsed chromatin (MSUC), which helps control the quality of meiosis. HORMAD2 is also required for activating ATR on sex chromosomes, independent of DNA breaks, through an interaction with BRCA1, which is crucial for the formation of sex bodies (specialized structures within cells).

HORMAD2 is also known as CT46.2.
