HEPN1

Description

The HEPN1 (hepatocellular carcinoma, down-regulated 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

HEPN1 (Hepatocellular carcinoma, down-regulated 1) is a gene that produces a short protein found mainly in the cytoplasm of liver cells. Studies show that HEPN1 expression can slow down cell growth and might play a role in programmed cell death (apoptosis). Notably, HEPN1 expression is often reduced or completely absent in liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), suggesting its loss contributes to the development of this cancer. Interestingly, the HEPN1 gene is located within the non-coding region of another gene, HEPACAM, on the opposite strand of DNA.
