HEMK1

Description

The HEMK1 (HemK methyltransferase family member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

HemK methyltransferase family member 1 (HEMK1) is a protein that is encoded by the HEMK1 gene in humans.

HEMK1 is an N5-glutamine methyltransferase that modifies the glutamine residue within the GGQ motif found in mitochondrial translation release factors. These factors include MTRF1, MTRF1L, MRPL58/ICT1, and MTRFR. This methylation event is essential for proper mitochondrial protein synthesis.

HEMK1 is also known as HEMK, MPRMC, MTQ1.
