GUK1

Description

The GUK1 (guanylate kinase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

Guanylate kinase is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the GUK1 gene.

Guanylate kinase 1 (GUK1) catalyzes the phosphorylation of GMP to GDP, playing a crucial role in recycling GMP and indirectly, cyclic GMP (cGMP). It participates in cGMP metabolism within photoreceptors and may contribute to tumor survival and growth. GUK1 is essential for converting prodrugs, like acyclovir, ganciclovir, 6-thioguanine, and 6-mercaptopurine, into their active forms, used to treat cancers and viral infections.

GUK1 is also known as GMK.
