Description
The GUCA1A (guanylate cyclase activator 1A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.
Guanylyl cyclase-activating protein 1 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the GUCA1A gene.
Guanylyl cyclase-activating protein 1 (GCAP1) regulates retinal guanylyl cyclase activity in a calcium-dependent manner. When calcium levels are low, GCAP1 stimulates guanylyl cyclase, leading to increased cyclic GMP production and recovery of the dark state in rod photoreceptors after light exposure. Conversely, when calcium levels are elevated, GCAP1 inhibits guanylyl cyclase. This calcium-sensitive regulation is crucial for photoreceptor function. Additionally, GCAP1 may be involved in cone photoreceptor light response and recovery in bright light.
