GRIK5
Description
The GRIK5 (glutamate ionotropic receptor kainate type subunit 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
GRIK5 is a human gene encoding a protein that belongs to the glutamate-gated ionic channel family. It plays a role in the central nervous system as the major excitatory neurotransmitter, activating ligand-gated ion channels and G protein-coupled membrane receptors. GRIK5 forms functional kainate-preferring ionic channels in combination with other subunits encoded by related gene family members. It has been shown to interact with DLG4 and GRIK2.
GRIK5 is a glutamate receptor that binds kainate with the highest affinity, followed by quisqualate, domoate, L-glutamate, AMPA, and then NMDA and 1S,3R-ACPD. It acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter at synapses in the central nervous system.
GRIK5 is also known as EAA2, GRIK2, GluK5, KA2.
