GRIK3

Description

The GRIK3 (glutamate ionotropic receptor kainate type subunit 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The GRIK3 gene encodes a protein that belongs to the ligand-gated ionic channel family. It can form heteromeric receptors with either GRIK4 or GRIK5 and acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter at many synapses in the central nervous system. RNA editing in the mRNA has been reported.

This receptor acts as a ligand-gated ion channel in the central nervous system, playing a crucial role in excitatory synaptic transmission. L-glutamate, a key excitatory neurotransmitter, interacts with this receptor at numerous synapses in the central nervous system. The postsynaptic effects of L-glutamate are mediated by various receptors, classified based on their specific agonists. This receptor exhibits a preference for domoate, followed by kainate, L-glutamate and quisqualate, with a much lower affinity for AMPA and NMDA.

GRIK3 is also known as EAA5, GLR7, GLUR7, GluK3, GluR7a.
