GRID1

Description

The GRID1 (glutamate ionotropic receptor delta type subunit 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

GRID1 gene encodes the Glutamate receptor delta-1 subunit, also known as GluD1 or GluRδ1, a transmembrane protein (1009 aa). A C-terminal GluD1 splicing isoform (896 aa) has been described based on mRNA analysis. GRID1 is expressed in the central nervous system and is important in synaptic plasticity. Several genetic epidemiology studies have shown a strong association between several variants of the GRID1 gene and increased risk of developing schizophrenia.

GRID1 encodes a subunit of glutamate receptor ligand-gated ion channel, which mediates fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. L-glutamate acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter at many synapses in the central nervous system. The postsynaptic actions of Glu are mediated by a variety of receptors that are named according to their selective agonists.

GRID1 is also known as GluD1, GluD1-b.
